Friday Favorites 6/13/14

Just one month in and I'm already switching things up on you! Dropping the Friday Five and switching to Friday Favorites. I hope you'll forgive me : )

Here's my roundup of favorite links from last week. For more, hang out with me on facebook and twitter.

Vegan Coconut and Pistachio Ice Cream (Joy the Baker) --> I want coconut milk ice cream every day this summer.
Sugar-Free Vegan Snickers Ice Cream (Keepin' it Kind) --> If I'm going to eat it every day, I probably need to work some variety in, you know, for health reasons.
Grilled Avocado Tacos with Cilantro Yogurt Sauce (Honest Fare) --> Have you ever tried grilled avocado? If not, you should.
Warm Cauliflower Salad with Peas, Herbs and Feta (Green Kitchen Stories) --> Cauliflower has morphed from my least favorite vegetable to one of my favorites in the past few years thanks to it's versatility.
Mushroom Larb (Healthy Aperture) --> If you can look beyond it's unfortunate name, larb is one of the highlights of Thai and Loatian cuisine. Love this vegan version using mushrooms!
Away Court Habits: Living Well On The Road (Summer Tomato) --> I tell my clients to throw health worries to the side and life it up on vacation. But if you travel regularly or for work, it's important to maintain some semblance of a healthy lifestyle. This post has plenty of realistic ideas that won't cramp your style on the road.
Losing And Gaining...And Accepting Myself At Every Weight (Can You Stay For Dinner) --> A beautiful and honest post about the journey of weight loss. Once you've lost weight, it doesn't mean the journey is over. I cried reading this.
What Causes Weight Gain (The New York Times) --> Hint - it's not a single nutrient.
40 Maps That Explain Food In The US (Vox) --> This is simply fascinating. Watch corn photosynthesize from space. Learn why Waffle House reports to FEMA. See why Texans are really confused about what constitutes barbeque.
Whitewashed: How Industry and Government Promote Dairy Junk Foods (Eat Drink Politics)--> If you've heard me ramble about my cheese obsession, you know I'm not anti-dairy. But it's not something we need to survive, yet it's marketed as such. This report by Michele Simon is eye-opening.
There's No Such Thing As Italian Food (Walks of Italy) --> One of my favorite things about Italian cuisine is how it changes so drastically from region to region. Very cool read about the dishes of each region.
Myths and Truths of Female Solo Travel (Kiss from the World) --> I think every woman should take at least one solo trip in their lifetime, and if not that, at least go to the movies, dinner or do something solo. Great advice that addresses the many concerns female travelers have.
