Friday Favorites 7/18/14

Here are my favorite links from last week. For more, hang out with me on facebook and twitter. Would love to connect with you!

Sweet Potato And Lentil Gnocchi With Basil Cream Sauce (London Bakes) --> I've been loving all the recipes everyone is sharing from The Homemade Flour Cookbook. Please keep posting so I can have the equivalent of the entire cookbook on my pinterest boards. Or better yet, early Christmas gift anyone??

Quinoa Flour Roasted Cauliflower Steaks (Eat This Poem) --> Another one from Homemade Flour. I can't believe I'm saying this but cauliflower actually makes a really delicious and satisfying vegetarian main, especially when coated with protein rich quinoa.

Sweet Corn, Peaches, and Cherry Salad with Goat Cheese (Flourishing Foodie) --> I'm usually not big on fruit in savory dishes, but with peaches and cherries at their summertime peak, this sounds divine.

Raspberry Ripple Buckwheat Porridge (My New Roots) --> I heard about raw buckwheat porridge on an episode of Splendid Chef from South Carolina's very own Sean Brock (of Husk fame). It sounded intriguing, but complicated. But according to this recipe, it's nothing more than an overnight soak and a quick whir through a high powered blender.

The Five Best Guacamoles In America (Yahoo) --> Guac with chipotle and toasted almonds...sweet pea guac....classic....I think I should make all of these and have a taste test to narrow it down to #1, don't you think?
5 Tips For Picking A Perfect Melon (The Kitchn) --> I was literally just complaining to a friend last night how I can never pick a good melon, then this came through my inbox this morning (along with her reply containing the exact same tips!). Ask, and you shall receive.
Sourcing Ingredients (Naturally Ella) --> The biggest concern I hear from clients is that they don't know where to purchase some of the ingredients I use. I hate that, because I never want healthy eating to feel inaccessible. Many conventional grocery stores are surprisingly well stocked, but items might be in odd places. If there is a health food store in driving distance, head out there a few times a year to stock up on grains and flours from the bulk aisle. If all else fails, this post has links where you can order many of the ingredients online.

Stress And High Fat Meals Combine To Slow Metabolism In Women (Science Daily) --> I can't overstate the importance of stress management for weight control. It's been my experience that stress can make it near impossible to drop pounds and should be a component of every weight loss program. Another point to add - this study implicates high fat meals, but the experimental meals were also full of refined carbohydrate and processed meat, just as likely (or more likely!) to be culprits.
Are Organic Foods More Nutritious? And Is This The Right Question? (Food Politics) --> Whether organic produce contains more nutrients than conventionally grown is controversial. A recently released meta-analysis says yes, however it was partially funded by organic groups. Still, there are plenty of reasons to purchase organic, including less exposure to chemicals and for the environment. Watching your food dollar? Use it where it counts the most - animal foods and the dirty dozen.
Hey Miss Idaho, Is That An Insulin Pump On Your Bikini? (NPR) --> Between this, "Carleigh's ass," and Bethany's colostomy, the internet has been abuzz with women rockin' their imperfections (or perfections in my opinion). Love it!
The New Face of Hunger (National Geographic Magazine) --> Such an important read.
