Friday Favorites 8/8/14

Phew! It's been a busy, but exciting week here in the Hartley household. Last weekend, my mom visited from Atlanta. Despite the rainy weather, we had a really nice time, enjoying a night at the Columbia Museum of Art for their quarterly Arts & Draughts party and had Scott's mom over to belatedly celebrate her birthday with a homecooked meal. I love showing guests how Columbia's food scene is rapidly growing, so on Saturday, we grabbled lunch at Good Life Cafe, a raw vegan restaurant right on downtown Main Street. The zucchini manicotti with lemon-almond ricotta was amazing, but the tacos are still my favorite - stay tuned for my homemade version! On Sunday, we enjoyed a leisurely brunch at The Oak Table before jetting off to teach a nutrition class on decoding the food label at my studio.

Workwise, this week has been crazy, hectic, and exhausting with 13 hour workdays. And I've loved it! Not only has it been busy with clients, but I've been training daily for a once a week position at a local hospital. They are short staffed, and it'll be helpful for me as I start up the new business. Once a week I'll be covering inpatients, a big change after almost exclusively working as an outpatient dietitian for the last five years. So far though, I have been so impressed with how knowledgable in involved with the medical care these RDs are - not to mention how welcoming and kind they have been! Slowly but surely, my skills from the good ol' days in the ICU is coming back!

My poor husband hasn't seen my face unobstructed by a computer screen in a week, so we're having a much deserved date night, taking a picnic dinner to a surprise location tonight. Tomorrow, I'll be jetting from baby shower to couples wedding shower, celebrating big life changes for some college friends I've known since freshman year.

So here it is, my weekly roundup of favorite links from around the web. Share your favorites in the comments below. For more, hang out with me on twitter and facebook!

Fiesta Kale Wraps (Sprouted Kitchen) --> Congrats Sara on the new baby (and on these amazing veggie wraps)!
Life Changing Crackers (My New Roots) --> When I tried the life changing loaf last year, I was totally shocked to find a loaf of bread made without a speck of flour or a single egg could be so, well, breadlike. Something tells me these crispy crackers will be even better.

Healthy Cinnamon Crunch Cereal (Running to the Kitchen) --> I'm not a fan of cinnamon crunch cereal. Even as a child I preferred geriatric varieties. But these crunchy squares made from flax and nut meal I can get behind!

Acai Fresca (Green Kitchen Stories) --> Chia fresca is one of my favorite ways to sneak in chia seeds, especially during the hot summer months. People might look at you strange when you pull out a drink with little black dots in it, but that's okay, cause we'll know you're getting a super powered nutrient boost ; )
Sausage and Sweet Potato Lasagna (Pinch of Yum) --> Holy moly that sweet potato sauce looks too good for words.

Jiminy Cricket! Bugs Could Be The Next Food Craze (The New York Times) --> A few years ago, the hubs and I watched an episode of Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern where he travels to San Francisco and visits a restaurant specializing in bugs. This somehow led us to google bug recipes, purely out of curiosity (I promise, mealworm tacos won't be my next post). After stumbling across a recipe for cricket fried rice, Scott replied "that's so weird. I've never seen fried rice with corn in it." Really?? That's what struck you as odd??
Do You Have FOMO Around Food? (JillFit) --> FOMO = Fear of Missing Out. How many times have you overindulged or eaten something you didn't truly love out of a fear of missing out? I see my clients doing this on an unconscious level all the time. Next time, ask yourself if your truly missing anything if you pass on that Krispy Kreme or takeout pizza dinner. You'll have countless opportunities to eat those foods (and probably much tastier versions) in the future!
On Worrying (Lean Green Bean) --> This flowchart is probably the most helpful thing I've ever seen. I think I might print it out and laminate it.

Do You Want To Be Happy? Don't Set Your Expectations Too High (NPR) --> One of my favorite bits of relationship advice came from my uncle. Back in the day, he interviewed a couple celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary for a newpaper article. When he asked for their secret to success, the husband replied "I didn't set my expectations very high." While it's great to dream big, it's also nice to be pleasantly surprised by the little successes in life.
How To Overcome a Devastating Setback (Marie Forleo) --> Although this video is geared towards professional setbacks, the advice is helpful for anyone whose fallen off the healthy eating train. The people I see who are most successful in reaching their health and weight goals fail just as frequently as anyone else. But, they look at each slip as an opportunity for learning and growing.
