Friday Favorites 10/3/14

It's Friday, so you know what that means. Time for another roundup of my favorite links from around the web. For a daily dose, follow me on facebook and twitter.

Vanilla Bean Chia Porridge with Caramel Pears (Gourmande in the Kitchen) --> Chia breakfast pudding is one of the most popular recipes on the blog, and one of the most popular recipes in our kitchen. This version topped with sweet sautéed pears is perfect for fall.
Latke Waffles (Smitten Kitchen) --> My mom bought we a waffle maker and I won't be able to get it until Thanksgiving. Of course, ever since she told me, I've been running across waffle recipes like this that make me want to immediately drive 3 1/2 hours to get it.

Pumpkin Spiced Coffee Concentrate (Living Well Kitchen) --> This one's for you PSL devotees. I just love this method for making coffee concentrate. It's got me brainstorming all sorts of ideas from vanilla hazelnut to peppermint mocha.

Mexican Cauliflower Rice Salad (Oh My Veggies) --> I've developed a bit of an unhealthy obsession with cauliflower...or maybe it's a healthy obsession? Cauliflower is a nutritious, and non-wilty, replacement for your lunchbox salad greens.

Tumeric Compound Boosts Regeneration Of Brain Stem Cells (Science Daily) --> Tumeric has long been associated with a decreased risk of alzheimer's disease. India, a country where tumeric is consumed almost daily, has one of the lowest rates. It's fascinating to learn how a simple spice has such a powerful effect on your brain. Sneak some extra tumeric in your diet with these tips.
Coconut Oil: Healthy Or Hype (Oh My Veggies) --> I'm frequently asked about coconut oil, once considered an artery clogging saturated fat, now touted as the cure to all your ills. This article is a great look at the science of it.

Can Antibiotics Early In Life Put Your Child At Risk For Obesity (Yahoo Health) --> More evidence that our gut bacteria plays a powerful role in weight control.
I Was The Poster Boy For Weight Loss...Then I Gained 200 Lbs (Mind Body Green) --> If you saw the documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, you'll remember Phil, the 400 lb truck driver who lost over 200 lbs by juicing. Ignore your opinion on juicing for a moment. This story is inspiring because of the (very real) struggle.
Watch Irish People Eat American Junk Food For The First Time (Take Part) --> Hilarious. "It tastes like the color grey."
Failure Is An Option: Where Would We Be Without It? (National Geographic) --> I read this article last week week (yes, I am a year behind reading my Nat Geos), and was struck by how pertinent it was for anyone trying to lose weight. This quote pretty much sums it up - "Failure gives you a chance to refine your approach."
Most Innovative Women in Food And Drink (Foods & Wine) --> Ending the post with a little bit of girl power.

On Avocado this week:
Curried Coconut Corn Chowder --> Speaking of tumeric, here's another way to sneak it in.
Good Eats in Montreal --> Alternate title - a plant-based dietitian goes paleo.
25 Green Smoothies For Glowing Skin (Hello Glow) --> Featuring my strawberry banana green smoothie bowl and 24 delicious others!
