Friday Five 6/6/14

Every Friday, I'm sharing a roundup of my favorite links from the week. Want to see all my favorites? Follow me on twitter at @RHartleyRD where I'll be sharing more throughout the week.

Recipes:

Sticky Fig BBQ Sauce and Tempeh (Nutrition Stripped) --> Barbeque for vegans! The sauce looks amazing! Would love to slather it on roasted wild salmon, although that would obviously unveganize it.
Smashed Avocado, Black Bean and Roasted Tomato Toasts (Blissful Basil) --> Mmm, this kinda reminds me of my favorite breakfast, avocado and tomato toast, but much prettier!
Chocolate Beet Cupcakes with Chocolate Mascarpone Frosting (Naturally Ella) --> Holy smokes.
Strawberry Oatmeal Breakfast Bowl (Oh My Veggies) --> How creamy and delicious does this look!
Honey Ginger Tofu and Vegetable Stir Fry (Pinch of Yum) --> I think even tofu skeptics will like this one - just look at all that caramelization!

Nutrition:

How to Ferment Vegetables (Running to the Kitchen) --> First I was sprouting, now I'm fermenting. My kitchen is looking scarier each day.
What If We All Just Stopped Trying To Lose Weight (Scientific American) --> Love love love this. We should stop talking about weight loss as a goal and start talking about it as a side effect of changing our health behaviors.
Your Panera Lunch Will Soon Be Free Of Artificial Ingredients (Take Part) --> Thrilled to hear this! Although it's not ideal, Panera is my go-to when I'm traveling and forget to pack a lunch. Remember though, this doesn't necessarily mean all their options are a healthy, everyday option. The bread will still be made with refined, white flour, the animal products will not be organic and their cookies will still be cookies.
Guide to Probiotics (Nutrition Stripped) --> I'm regularly asked about probiotics. This is a great summary.
How Sugar Went From a Condiment to a Diet Staple (Time) --> It's a sad, sad story.

Travel:

French Riviera Road Trip (Bruised Passports) --> Take a virtual road trip through the South of France. Sigh...
Rethinking the Travel Bucket List (Land Lopers) --> Go for experiences, not pictures (says the girl who just took 2,000 plus pictures on a one-week vacation).
A Taste of Charleston, Old School and New (The New York Times) --> I love that Charleston, less than 2 hours away, has become the mecca of the new Southern cuisine.
The Ultimate Digital Detox: Walking (National Geographic) -->
In Dubrovnik, Croatia, Fantasy and Reality Live Side by Side (The Washington Post) --> I'm dying to do a Game of Thrones tour, preferably with Oberyn Martell as my tour guide. Who's with me?

Random:

21 Dogs That Have No Ideas How Big They Are (Pulptastic) --> Your weekly dose of cute. #7 and #21 are my favorite, obviously.
Lovely AM http://zenhabits.net/morning/
The Art of Getting Back on Track (Delicious Knowledge) --> Fantastic advice on how to get back on track with your health goals. My favorite part? Not feeling guilty about getting off track in the first place.
How I Started My Business (Healthfully Ever After) --> A must read for any aspiring RDs. You DO NOT have to start in clinicals. I repeat - clinical experience is NOT necessary!
The Genes of Craft Beer (The New York Times) -->Y'all know I love my craft beer. This is simply fascinating. On a related note, yay for SC beer!
Creating a Lovely Morning (Zen Habits) --> Since starting my practice, I've made a concerted effort to journal and do yoga or meditate each morning. Even if it's just for 10 minutes, it has a powerful impact on my productivity and mood. These are really helpful and do-able tips, even for those of you who are addicted to the snooze button.
